About town
The spa town of Poděbrady lies in the picturesque Elbe lowlands, 50 kilometres east from Prague.
Its history started with the foundation of a settlement near the Elbe river ford. The stone castle built under the rule of king Přemysl Otakar II was later rebuilt through extensive conversions into a chateau. The town experienced its greatest times under the rule of King George of Poděbrady, whose memorial is located in the second castle´s courtyard.
The discovery of a spring of healing water in 1905 was one of the most significant events in history of Poděbrady and foreshadowed a golden age of the town which began in 1908 with the first spa season.
